Join us on Wednesday, August 26th at 3:30 pm EDT for the last of our program series for the 2020 Summer Assembly as we welcome Dr. James H. Johnson Jr., Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship in the Kenan-Flagler Business School and Director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center in the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as he delivers a talk entitled Leading and Managing in an Era of Disruptive Demographics and "Certain-Uncertainty."
Dr. Johnson’s past research has included community and economic development, the effects of demographic changes on the U.S. workplace, interethnic minority conflict in advanced industrial societies, poverty, and public policy in urban America.
He is currently researching strategies to combat hyper- segregation, persistent and concentrated poverty, and gentrification-induced residential and economic dislocations in U.S. cities. Dr. Johnson also works with gentrifying cities to develop roadmaps for inclusive and equitable economic development that creates shared prosperity. This capstone talk for our season is not to be missed.

Join us on Wednesday, August 19th at 3:30 pm EDT for our sixth of seven programs during this 2020 Summer Assembly as we welcome Dr. William Darity Jr., Samuel DuBois Cook Professor of Public Policy, African and African American Studies, and Economics at Duke University and A. Kirsten Mullen, writer, folklorist and the founder of Artefactual together to a live discussion moderated by AAHH Board Chairman Erroll Davis on the subject of reparations for Black Americans in the 21st Century. The title for the discussion will be "The ARC of Justice: A Discussion on Reparations."
Dr. Darity’s resume also includes founding director of the Research Network on Racial and Ethnic Inequality at Duke. His research focused on inequality by race, class and ethnicity, stratification economics, schooling and the racial achievement gap, North-South theories of trade and development, skin shade and labor market outcomes, the economics of reparations, the Atlantic slave trade, and the Industrial Revolution, the history of economics, and the social-psychological effects of exposure to unemployment.
Ms. Mullen was a member of the Freelon Adjaye Bond concept development team that was awarded the Smithsonian Institution’s commission to design the National Museum of African American History and Culture. She was also a faculty member of the Community Folklife Documentation Institute, where she trained students to research and document the state’s African American music heritage.
Dr. Darity and Ms.Mullen are co-authors of From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-first Century (University of North Carolina Press, 2020).

Join us on Wednesday, August 12th at 3:30 pm EDT for our fifth of seven lectures during this 2020 Summer Assembly as we welcome Dr.George McCarthy, President, and CEO of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy as he discusses Land Policy and Structural Racism. The title of his speech will be Think Land Policy Is Unrelated to Racial Injustice? Think Again.
Dr.McCarthy joined the Lincoln Institute in 2014 from the Ford Foundation where he directed programming in Metropolitan Opportunity. His vast experiences range from Professor of Economics at Bard College to Research Associate at the Centre for Social Research in St. Petersburg, Russia. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of North Carolina.

Join us on Wednesday, August 5th at 3:30 pm EDT for our fourth of seven lectures during this 2020 Summer Assembly as we welcome Dr. Meria Carstarphen, former superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools, who will address the challenges of urban education today given societal biases, shrinking budgets, and global pandemics. The title of her speech will be The New Reconstruction: Transforming Education for the 21st Century.

Dr. Carstarphen has over 20 years of leadership and management experience in diverse and urban environments and is passionate about working to make communities stronger, especially through the equalizing power of education from early childhood through college. Before serving in Atlanta, she was the superintendent in other major metropolitan public school districts, including Austin, Texas, and Saint Paul, Minnesota. By working in capital cities, Dr. Carstarphen has demonstrated experience working closely with governors, state legislatures, and state education chiefs to make recommendations and advise on policy impacts to public institutions, ranging from human trafficking and community health to accountability assessments and economic impact. As a member of her community, she has served on boards of the local arts organizations such as Ballet Austin, Atlanta Ballet, and the Woodruff Arts Center.
She has recently completed terms of service on the visiting committee for the Harvard Graduate School of Education and as a commissioner with the Aspen Institute’s AspenSEAD, a national commission focused on social-emotional and academic development.

Dr.Martha S. Jones
Join us on Wednesday, July 29th at 3:30 pm EDT for our third of seven lectures during this 2020 Summer Assembly as we welcome Dr.Martha S. Jones, Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor and Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University, who will discuss 200 Years of Black Female Suffrage. During Week Eight, Dr. Jones will be the resident scholar at Chautauqua Institution.

Professor Jones has authored several books including Vanguard: How Black Women Broke Barriers, Won the Vote and Insisted on Equality for All (Basic Books 2020), Birthright Citizens: A History of Race and Rights in Antebellum America (Cambridge University Press 2018) and frequently writes for broader audiences at media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Atlantic. She is recognized as a public historian for her work and for her curating museum exhibitions including “Reframing the Color Line” and “Proclaiming Emancipation” in conjunction with the William L. Clements Library, and for collaborations with the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, the Charles Wright Museum of African American History and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Thurstone Professor of Philosophy & Psychology, and Head of the Department of Philosophy, at Carnegie Mellon University to discuss “Cultural biases in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Algorithms”

Prof. Danks has examined the ethical, psychological, and policy issues around AI and robotics in transportation, healthcare, privacy, and security.
As Chief Ethicist of CMU’s Block Center for Technology & Society, his research interests are at the intersection of philosophy, cognitive science, and machine learning, using ideas, methods, and frameworks from each to advance our understanding of complex, interdisciplinary problems.

Dr. Fahamu Pecou
Join us on Wednesday, July 15th at 3:30 p.m. EDT for our first of seven lectures during this 2020 Summer Assembly as we welcome Dr. Fahamu Pecou, an interdisciplinary artist and scholar, whose works combine observations on hip-hop, fine art, and popular culture as he dives into Notions of Resistance in Black Art.
His works have been featured in noted private and public national and international collections including the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and you can currently see his work in the current issue of the magazine Creative Loafing and a commissioned work will appear this week on the cover of Atlanta Magazine
