The Mirror Project
Chautauqua Institution has a history of convening conversations and dialogue, with the African American Heritage House at Chautauqua hosting some of the most dynamic and important conversations about race on the grounds. The Institution and the AAHH have partnered since the summer of 2020 on the Mirror Project to spur year-around community discussions, reflections and engagement on race, racism and anti-racism. The project has grown to include an ongoing reading circle where community members are encouraged to read books, convene in discussions, and consider what part each of us can play in creating a more just and equitable society.
The Racial Allyship Project
The Racial Allyship Project is an eight-week study and discussion group focused on the historical narrative that created a privileged White hierarchy. Project participants will collectively work to understand their personal journeys through the lens of race and explore implicit racism and how it is woven into institutional racism. The Project’s objective is to move participants from recognition of racism to Anti-racism and then to define a vision for the next generation.
The study involves review of multiple resources focused on the weekly topic, followed by a ninety-minute small group Zoom meeting each week with a facilitator to lead discussion. Each participant will be given opportunities to share their own experiences with race and practice how to participate in difficult conversations regarding racism and racist remarks they encounter. The final task will be for each participant to formulate a personal plan for racial allyship work in their own lives.
